Lament

Choked
behind the tight walls of my throat
dares to escape
the long wail of an injured animal
or a grieving widow

the howl that snakes through
the fringed branches of the deepest woods
cast in confusing shadow
last sliver of moonlight

the cry that flies
on the night air
paints goosebumps up the back of my neck

this song, this lament
pushes the air from my collapsed chest
demanding release, expression
flooding out of me only to be
absorbed again
through ears and skin and

choked
behind the tight walls of my throat
